I’ll never forget the moment the Holy Spirit imprinted the lyrics and melody of "I’m Alive" in my heart.
It happened during a visit to a pregnancy resource center in Hazleton, Pennsylvania.
The founder showed me baby models representing the stages of growth in a mother's womb. I was amazed at how tiny human life is at just eight weeks—the size of a strawberry!
Holding those models, I was struck by the wonder of how such a tiny being grows into a human like you and me. In that moment, the Holy Spirit filled me with a melody and words, like an experience straight out of the Bible—much like when Elizabeth felt John the Baptist leap in her womb, recognizing Jesus, and was filled with the Holy Spirit. Isn’t it incredible that John first recognized Jesus while still in the womb? What a sacred place that is.
I also thought of my own mom, who gave birth to seven girls—I’m the youngest. It was then that I truly understood her passion for protecting life in the womb. She experienced this miracle seven times.
After the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, my mom became a devoted advocate for life. In 1974, she even wrote her own song, “Voice of the Unborn Baby,” which had a profound impact on me as I grew up. I felt called to carry on her legacy in my own way.
After returning home from that visit, I picked up my guitar and began to play. I sent the song to my band back in Eagle Rock, PA, and they added the beat and tone that brought it to life.
